My parents are not just the White Republican stereotype — they’re also evangelical Christian missionaries. I am none of those things, and this has understandably been a matter of contention between us. But in becoming the agnostic Democrat and activist that I am, I keep telling them “You taught me to be this person. Your faith and your bible mandate caring about the poor and the immigrant.” What follows is usually an uncomfortable silence. I’m glad to see a few evangelical leaders stepping up to reject a candidate who embodies the opposite of everything they should be standing for.
