Wine of the Day #2:
2012 Château Marjosse ‘Pierre Lurton’
Bordeaux, France *US Exclusive (from invino)
Château d’Yquem & Cheval Blanc
Increasingly HOT, and why shouldn’t it be? This Chateau is the home estate of Pierre Lurton, one of Bordeaux most sought after VIPs and the managing director of Cheval Blanc and Chateau d’Yquem.
This Decanter World Wine Award winner and 90-point Spectator wine is a very typically Right Bank blend of about 80% Merlot with the balance equally made up of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, this red hails from the Entre-Deux-Mers, a swathe of vineyard land between Graves and St. Emilion known for its spectacular values compared to both of its more famous neighbors.
Fresh tobacco, bright mint and ripe blackberry and currant fruit on the nose precede a palate impression that is modern with vivid raspberry notes but with a nod toward tradition, too, with dark mocha and a hint of spicy bell pepper. It’s a classic red from the region and a terrific introduction for those just embarking on a study of Bordeaux.
Our Sourcers went direct with this one, bypassing the markups incurred by importers and distributers, in order to bring one of Bordeaux’s most significant values to Members at an unheard of price. We advise buying in bulk — some to lay down in the cellar and some to pop now and enjoy with red meat, game and poultry.
Reasons why we love it:
Few personalities are as respected and followed in Bordeaux as Pierre Lurton. With a few of the world’s most prestigious labels under his auspices, Lurton has proven his mettle in the region creating a sort of wine dynasty that is the envy of many chateau owners. Lurton purchased Marjosse in 1997, and has turned the estate into one of the very finest values in all of Bordeaux.
There are about 9 hectares of vineyards owned by Marjosse, all situated on the Entr-Deux Mers’ tremendous clay and limestone soil. These vines thrive at just 300 meters above sea level, and the wine is fermented and aged in Marjosse’s 200-year-old cellars.
90 points from the Wine Spectator, which writes: “Offers savory and mint aromas, with pure, unadorned cassis and cherry fruit. The chalk-framed finish displays cut and freshness.”
Dark red color with deep purple reflections. Fine, complex aromas with notes of violet, anise and herbs from the Mediterranean brush (thyme, rosemary). Full and silky, spiced up by grilled roasted notes with powerful, smooth tannins and a finish full of finesse.
