Don’t Figure, Follow
“While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God’s angel spoke in the dream: “Joseph, son of David, don’t hesitate to get married. Mary’s pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God’s Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus — ‘God saves’ — because he will save his people from their sins.” This would bring the prophet’s embryonic sermon to full term: Watch for this — a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son; They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for “God is with us”).” Matthew 1:20–23 MSG http://bible.com/97/mat.1.20–23.msg
When Joseph was trying to ‘figure a way out’ of his predicament of being formally engaged (in their society that was close to being married) to a shockingly now pregnant fiancee God broke in and gave direction.
That may be a common problem with us. We too ignoring the wise words of Proverbs 3:3–5 lean on our understanding and think we can direct our own paths. Mercifully God breaks in because He loves and has plans for us. When we are about to cross a road ignoring oncoming traffic He shoots His arm out and rescues us from a bad accident.
Let’s learn though to not be rescued every time. Let’s instead pause before deciding and ‘ask what pleases the Lord’. If He can rescue us can He not also guide us?
