A deep-sea submersible, carrying a crew of five people, was found in pieces near the wreck of the Titanic after a “catastrophic implosion” that resulted in the loss of all lives on board. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the discovery, concluding a multinational search operation that lasted five days.

A robotic diving vehicle deployed from a Canadian ship located debris from the submersible named Titan on the ocean floor. The debris field was found approximately 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the front of the Titanic, at a depth of 2 1/2 miles (4 km) in the remote North Atlantic. Rear Admiral John Mauger of the U.S. Coast Guard provided this information during a press conference.

The submersible, operated by OceanGate Expeditions based in the United States, had been missing since it lost contact with its support ship on Sunday morning. The incident occurred about an hour and 45 minutes into the submersible’s planned two-hour dive to explore the famous shipwreck.

Coast Guard officials identified five significant fragments of the 22-foot (6.7-meter) Titan in the debris field, including parts of the submersible’s tail and two sections of its pressure hull. There was no mention of human remains being sighted.
