Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton picked up Bae Ji-hwan Bae, who was thrown out at first base, with some warm words of advice.

MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, reported on Thursday (Feb. 24) that Shelton comforted Bae, saying, “Bae’s missed play at first base is part of the learning process.”

Bae, who started at second base in the №8 spot in the lineup for the 2023 Major League Baseball team’s home game against the Texas Rangers at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was disappointed with his 2-for-3 performance. Two of his hits went for extra bases.

He registered a hit in his first at-bat. Trailing 0–2 in the top of the third inning, he took a two-pitch splitter up the middle after an initial strike from Texas starter Nathan Iovaldi and lined it cleanly into left field. It was his fourth hit in his last five games.

Bae is tied for second in the National League in stolen bases (14). Opposing batters became more alert. Pitcher Iovaldi and catcher Jonah Heim both threw strikes to first base in an attempt to contain Bae’s quick feet, but it didn’t work. One inning later, Andrew McCutchen was retired on a pitcher’s interference call. A video review was requested by the Pittsburgh bench, but the call was upheld.

Bae struck again in his third at-bat. Trailing 1–6 in the eighth inning with the bases loaded, he singled to center field to complete his first multi-hit game in three games since April 20 against Arizona. McCutchen’s single to right field with two on and one out went past second base and heading for third, but he was tagged out at second. The umpire’s video review upheld the original call, and Bae threw his helmet to the ground in deep disappointment.

However, the manager did not criticize Bae’s play. Rather, he surrounded the second-year big leaguer with warm words. “It hurts, but it makes you mature, and you just have to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Pittsburgh manager Shelton.
