11 Things New York City Taught Me About Social Media (and life)

Stress. Impossible demands. How do you survive and thrive in such a dynamic environment?

After college, I wanted nothing more than to live and work in New York City. Three years later, I abruptly left on pretty bad terms (a story for another day). Despite our differences, New York has taught me more than I ever could have anticipated, and has helped me navigate the volatile relationships individuals and brands often have with social media. Here are some things I learned along the way:

  1. “Move fast and break things.” Facebook’s former famous mantra was likely inspired by Midtown’s pre-holiday rush hour. Run, don’t walk.
  2. Entertainment is everywhere. Appreciate the crazy that you decided to start a life with and realize its full potential.
  3. It never sleeps. STOPS. FOR. NO. ONE.
  4. Learn to embrace your haters. Resistance is futile — I’m talking to you, 6 Train Spitter.
  5. You will be judged. Intentions don’t matter, only actions and outcomes.
  6. People will take advantage of you. But only if you let them. Putting a stop to trolls or toxic coworkers will ultimately help you earn respect.
  7. Privacy is important. You don’t understand how important your privacy is until it’s violated. Please stop aggressively approaching me and asking if I’ve heard of “the female God.”
  8. You never know who you’ll meet. Random encounters can be magical. My (non-romantic) soulmate is actually a 70-something, former model named Lorraine. Unfortunately, we never exchanged numbers.
  9. No one is special. You’ll quickly discover that there is always someone more talented, more ambitious, or more creative than you. Don’t feel so bad. Or do. Find your story and master the art of telling it. It’s your only chance of standing out.
  10. There’s garbage everywhere. One word…HotTrash (yes, one). Hold your breath and keep walking. Don’t let the clutter distract you from your goals.
  11. It’s not as scary as you think. Reputation precedes reality. People are friendly. Foster life-long relationships that will help you grow personally and professionally.
