An Ethernet cable is widely used for establishing a connection between the computer and a LAN. It is also used between the Ethernet switch and other appliances like USB modem, computer, and other systems for sharing Internet connection as well as data. Buying large Ethernet cables is expensive. Instead, you can make use of the RJ45 crimper at home or office to cut various lengths of the cable and make different lengths of Ethernet cable depending on your requirement.

Types of Cable Used for Ethernet Connections

You can purchase CAT5e or category 5e cables from the market in bulk. If you are looking to make Ethernet cables for high-performance applications, CAT6 or category six cables are ideal. However, CAT6 cables are 20% more expensive when compared to CAT5e cables. You need RJ45 compatible connectors and RJ45 crimper on hand to make Ethernet cables with ease.

You can purchase RJ45 crimper from a local store along with RJ45 connectors and Ethernet cable (CAT5e, or CAT6). You can make two types of Ethernet cables namely Crossover and Straight Through.

The standard Ethernet cables employ the straight through type for most of the applications. They are known as patch cables. You need to make the connection using RJ45 crimping tool. Cross Over Ethernet cables is employed for connection between one computer and another. It does not require a hub, switch or router for establishing the connection between two devices.

Steps for making an Ethernet cable using the RJ45 connector and RJ45 crimping tool
· Measure the length of a cable from CAT5e or CAT6 cable spool and cut. Next, you need to remove the insulation or outer skin of the cable on one end of it using a utility knife.

· It exposes four twisted wires with the different color combination (Green and white striped, blue and white striped, brown and white striped, and orange and white striped) and the core in its middle.

· You need to carefully fold each pair backward, so that core of the cable is exposed to the front. Now using the utility knife, you need to remove the core.

· Straighten the pairs with the help of tweezers. Make the wires untwisted and place them in a row so that it quickly enters the RJ45 connector.

· Arrange the cables in the following order:
Orange with a white stripe and orange, green with a white stripe and blue, blue with a white stripe and green, brown with a white stripe and brown.

· Now Trim the untwisted wires of suitable length and insert into the RJ45 connector by making sure that the cables are in correct combination.

· The cables entry into the connector from the left side and the cables in the right order depending on straight through or cross over.

· Use RJ45 crimper carefully and press the jacket so that proper contact is made with the contactors in a connector.

· Your Ethernet cable is ready.
