I think there is something inherently different about the LGBTQ community. Unlike other communities, we are not typically raised within it. We find our elders over time and often after we’ve already been ostracized from the communities we grew up in. We choose our families and many of already know the pain of leaving toxic people behind us. Which might be why we as a self-built community with many intersections tend to self-police so thoroughly.
I also think many of us close rank quickly around issues of sexual assault because the argument of sexual deviancy is so often used against us. If we harbor abusers, it actively hurts our cause. Not to mention that many of us are survivors. Queer youth are some of the most at risk people to be victimized. We become vigilant.
