On Monday 24th of April, a group of elite businessmen, bankers and lawyers converged at the Oriental Hotel, from 8am to 6pm, to discuss the future of finance for Africa. I was privileged to be part of the group.
The event was put together by the Digital Finance Institute (DFI) in collaboration with FINTECH Associates Limited. DFI is based in Vancouver, Canada. DFI facilitated the 1st AI conference in Canada, in March.
During the Financial Inclusion section, Omokehinde Adebanjo of MasterCard, made a statement I could not shake-off.
Card is in our name but not necessarily in our future.
She went on to explain, that MasterCard is willing to facilitate transactions whether it is via card or not.
During the event, and a few days afterwards, it served as a good place in my memory to go back to. It shows the company, MasterCard, is customer-focused. It is not about MasterCard, it is about the customer.
Just 3 days ago, as the grip of the statement was lessening on my consciousness; MasterCard announced the completion of its acquisition of Vocalink. On the 11th of April, MasterCard got regulatory approval for the £700m ($900m) deal to buy 92.4% of Vocalink.
