Blog post - We are all unproductive : Productivity is a myth.
I need to confess first : I am a workaholic. I am lazy. I don't do life - work balance. I am horrible with time management. I love sleeping - the Bible says I shouldn't - I will repent. Help me Lord. And with everything said I am still able to do what I must do and sometimes I am too lazy.
If I don't read, research and find something unique daily I will suffocate or maybe die or my brain will shutdown. Work help me to express myself. I can't imagine life without reading, creating and building.
My opinions are usually or always wrong - I have opinions about school which people don't agree with ; I have opinions about writing, business , speaking and many other subjects. No matter how I try people will never change because I said something which they didn't agree with before. Same with productivity , I am not sure if I'm right but usually I'm horrible.
Time and money are the most common words you will ever hear in day - to - day conversation - I don't have money or I don't have time. If you don't have both you were supposed to be dead - RIP. If you have time to sleep, eat , dress, speak, you name all the basic activities then you surely have time. And if you say you don't have time maybe you need to reschedule your priorities.
It is easy to be busy doing nothing - we have enough distractions in the modern day society. People even have time to say : I am bored but they say they don't have time. The real challenge is to understand the mission which your life is about then you make every day to be about that mission. Unless you have some meaningful purpose in your life , you will be miserable.
What do you do with your day? 24hrs. Most of us our day is filled with other people's choices - job, mandates, meetings , etc. It is not to say that it is bad but you have to evaluate the journey of your life. Seneca wrote ," For a man who is burdened by the duties and busyness of the public , life is short ." How much of your day is filled with your own choices?
Are you productive? This is usually very important question in cooperations. When industrialists like Henry Ford put together the assembly line of Ford motors this was one of the most important factor to consider. Furthermore, Fredrick Taylor is recognized for coming with a better industrial efficiency method called - Scientific management ( you can read more about it : Wikipedia ) . The system was about time vs the object used to achieve a specific task and how can we increase efficiency in the production lines.
The challenge in our time is , we have produced enough robots. In fact, robots are the only productive objects. If you work eight hours, do you work for eight hours? We have to define what is being productive then we focus our energy on those tasks that makes us to accomplish the highest returns in a given day. We cannot accomplish everything today.
Unless you make every second, minute, hour , to count, which is not likely to happen, then you are not productive - every moment in your job is designed for you to get an output - no second should be lost but hours gets lost.
In any given day, we have to evaluate , what are the most three important tasks which gives us the highest returns or if there was something which today had to be accomplished, what would that be?
You might be familiar with the 80\20 rule. What is your 20 ? For work expands to meet the set time or deadlines.
As Seneca wrote, " It is not that we have so little time, but that we waste so much ."
