“The Art of Computer Programming” by Donald Knuth
Carl Tashian

Most insightful. Note that Knuth still thinks that this series can be extended to be a comprehensive text. Volume 5 is due out in 2025! He makes ambiguous noises about there being Volumes 6 and 7.

Knuth is one of the most beloved and respected people in CS, and with good reason. But really, his whole approach to CS was already out of date when I tackled TAOCP back in the 70s.

Still, I will always regret not finishing the three volumes in the original set. (The revised version, stirs no interest in me.) In my case, it’s not lack of obsession, but rather lack of ability. Rather like a good computer game I don’t have the hand-eye coordination to finish.
