My letter to Congress, Annotated
Saturday, January 28, 2017
Dear Representative Walters & Staff,
My name is Isaac Bresnick. I’m a registered Democrat, but I voted for Representative Mimi Walters in November. Right now, I’m taking time out of my preparation for the California Bar Exam because I feel this is more important.
I’m writing with regard to President Donald Trump’s executive order entitled, “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States.” Multiple news outlets report that the Department of Homeland Security claims that the order is enforceable against green card holders.
This is absolutely unacceptable. Green card holders are people who live in America. They work in America. They have each spent years following the legal procedure required to earn the privilege of staying here. They work for American businesses, and they are family to American citizens. And in an act that can only be described as careless and thoughtless, Pres. Trump has forbid them from returning to the United States — he has made them homeless — for the crime of exiting the country and flying back from the wrong airport.
As sophomore representative to House Republican Leadership, Rep. Walters is is in a position to make her voice heard louder than most. I urge her to organize Congressional support for a statutory curtailment of these terrible effects of Pres. Trump’s order.
I understand that party loyalty is a strong force, but we can only allow it to be so strong. I urge Rep. Walters to take a stand here, because foreign nations, like Iran, have already declared retaliatory action against American citizens. Take a stand, because it alienates our allies, and emboldens our enemies. Take a stand because it harms American businesses and disintegrates American families. Take a stand, if for no other reason, than because it is a historic insult to human dignity which will not soon be forgotten.
This order is wrong, and you guys know it. I hope you act accordingly.
