Jour 220 — Chapter 2 Review

The chapter starts out explaining the change and shift in media starting with an example of media consumption differences between 2009 and 2010. After this it transitions into a lengthy paragraph that addresses how people consume news today. It explains how Apple’s business model for the I-pad (among other mobile devices) have apps that allow media to be downloaded on to them or streamed live. Allowing its users to have round the clock access to news coverage.

Next the chapter breaks into the impact of media fragmentation on legacy media. Basically, the chapter explains how digital journalism and the way news is reported, are being re-invented. The book then explains there are many more places to get news media today than there were 25 years ago, and this in turn has a dramatic affect of audience sizes.

After this the chapter sheds light on the types of new audiences, the book says there are four main types of audiences, Traditionalists (which are older, less educated people who mainly gather news from TV) Then there are Integrators (better educated middle aged Americans who gather information from both legacy media as well as the internet) next there are Net-Newsers (generally young and well educated people, these people get there information mainly from the internet) and The disengaged (This group does not really get involved in the news and makes up about 14 percent of the population)

The rest of the chapter addresses Synchronized media coverage, Newspapers as the source of most news, embracing citizen journalism, The role of the public in news gathering, the problems with citizen journalism, new financial models for web-based journalism, for-profit models, not for profit models, and career’s in journalism today. Over all, i enjoyed this chapter, it explained a lot about the different types of journalism and audiences and gave me a better understanding of what exactly journalist’s do.
