WWDC 2017 Wishlist

With WWDC fast approaching, I thought I would put together a wishlist of what I’d like to see. Here’s my quick and dirty wishlist.

New Look

I think the iOS 7 aesthetic has matured since its debut 3 years ago. I wouldn’t mind a fresh look in iOS 11.

New Name

I’m not advocating for this, but I have a feeling iOS may get a bit of rebranding and instead of being called “iOS 11” may have another less technical name.

Calendar UI

iOS doesn’t have a native calendar controller (I don’t count UIDatePicker). I think it should. iOS 11 is the perfect time to add it.

Keyboard Notifications

I think that keyboard notifications and adjusting views for the keyboard are a more complicated solution than needed. I’d love to see the soft keyboard management improve.

App Collaboration

Something that I’ve wanted for awhile is the ability for one app to display a view from another app, sort of like how widgets show a snippet of a view from an app. I would like to see this ability to extend to third-party apps as well.

iCloud Drive

I want to see iCloud Drive be a real Dropbox competitor. This means having shared folders. Slightly improved pricing wouldn’t hurt either. For example, free photo storage would be great.

I’d like the ability to run server-side code on CloudKit to handle things like metrics and push notifications. It would also be awesome if CloudKit handled local persistence as well as persistence in the cloud, like Firebase does.

I’d like to see SiriKit expand beyond the current 5 areas of interest.

iMessage Apps

I think iMessage apps have a lot of potential. This year, I’d love to have the ability to have iMessage apps to later be able to become iOS apps as well. Currently iOS app can add an iMessage component, but the reverse isn’t possible. There are also several issues with discovery, education, and user experience, with using iMessage apps, and the iMessage App Store. There is a lot of room for growth here.

Handwriting Recognition

The Apple Pencil is one of my favorite accessories. I think it would be nice to have an API for native handwriting recognition.

The current iPad multitasking is sort of clunky and isn’t very elegant. I’d love to see this redone.

It would be awesome if FaceTime handoff worked between macOS and iOS.

iOS Apps

There is a lot involved here, but I’d love to see the ability to use some iOS apps on macOS.

I want to see an iPad version of Xcode. Swift Playgrounds was a big step in the right direction, but I feel like there is a whole lot more potential here.

Interface Builder

Interface Builder has improved every year that I’ve used it. It’s still too clunky for a beginner in my opinion. I’d like to see a simplified interface that works on iPad.

One more thing…

It’s about time that Apple had a competitor to the Amazon Echo and Google Home. I’m hoping to see it at WWDC. I’m certain there are things I’m forgetting but I think I hit the high points. What do you guys want to see?
