Why we stray away from the present moment and what will happen if we honour the present?

Ever noticed your thoughts in the elevator, while waiting for the bus, while taking a casual walk to the nearest grocery store or during any mundane activity which never engages your mind sufficiently thus it wanders off to some prime concerns of your life. Yes! You are consciously or subconsciously thinking about only those things which matter to you the most, irrespective of the task in hand.

Even when we think we are “engrosed" or “immersed" in something, some fine threads of our thought process stretch to reach out to a “treasure chest” in our mind containing unfulfilled desires and unresolved fears. We will choose a book, a shop, a fashion brand and even a life partner subconsciously to sort out either or both of those things from our treasure chest.

The “treasure chest"

It’s appropriate to call it a treasure chest because it’s components help us set our goals, shape our dreams and play a role in developing our unique personality.

But what will happen if for a couple of hours in a day we lock that chest and try to surrender to the only reality -present moment.

Just close the chest

Now, someone who is chasing a deadline or having big presentation coming up would not be experiencing the coffee while sipping it, he/she is imagining scenarios about how the presentation going good would fetch him the promotion and how it would make him happy. Maybe, he/she is afraid of it not going well and being negative about an event which is not a reality yet. Either way the person doing what he/she is supposed to do. And so, one is bound to feel helpless. Right now all which is in the person’s control is that cup of coffee and all one can do is to drink it and experience it. When we leave our mind’s treasure chest open 24x7, we , in a way, let it’s components surface in our mind all the time and we become captivated in them.

On the contrary, when it’s closed, we are in the realm of present bliss. We can take action in This moment. And that’s what makes it the only reality, where we actually are.

Sip the coffee

So all we are supposed do is to be here, right now. And drink the coffee while it’s still hot.

We are not time travellers, and we have control over our own actions, many factors will always be out of our control. But we all deserve to experience the natural blissful state of just being.
