Agree with you that it’s important to discuss the craft and the piece and not the author. In this case, I tried to keep the students focused on that but it wasn’t easy. The interesting part for me was that the author didn’t realize how strong a reaction would he get and certainly not the one he was hoping for. Although, when does one really know the effect a piece will have? Probably never, really, not fully.
