Muslim Marriage: 4 Simple Steps
In Islam, Nikah can be done in 4 simple ways, mentioned below:
- Submitted & Considered
Muslim marriages begin with this step. In most cases, a family elder will seek help from a marriage counselor or a friend to help their children find a suitable mate. Parents of the bride or groom receive wedding proposals.
If he wishes to marry the woman, he can also ask her father or guardian for her hand.
There are four reasons why women get married: wealth, family status, beauty, and religion. Blessed are those who marry her for respect.” — [Sahih-al-Bukhari & Sahih-al-Muslim]
Mixing two non-Mahrams or dating before nikah can be forbidden. When the bride and groom meet and speak before Nikah, a Mahram (father/brother/guardian) is present.
- Permission to marry or consent to marry
Upon the consent of the man or woman to be married, the proposal will be accepted. Since permission is a crucial first step, progress cannot be made without it. In order to proceed with the marriage again, all conditions must be met (such as immigrating after the wedding).
- The Nikkah
In a marriage ceremony, Nikah (Nikkah) is performed. Nikah (Nikkah) is affected by several factors.
The Dower (Mahr):
During the wedding ceremony, the groom gives the bride a gift known as a Mahr or dower. A simple act of kindness could be a gift, or it could be money, jewelry, or another valuable item.
Mahar has different meanings according to different cultures and people. Payment for Mahr can be made fully in advance, partially in advance and partially deferred, or deferred but payable on demand. — [Sahih-ul-Bukhari]
The Ijab-o-Qubool includes:
It concludes with “Ijab”, an expression of desire for marriage and acceptance of the Qubool (acceptance).
It is usually the wali or vakil who accepts the bride’s proposal in traditional weddings. The bride and groom both sign the written document (Nikah Nama) and two witnesses are also present.
The khutbah:
During the wedding ceremony, an Imam or Nikah Khawan will discuss Muslim weddings and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with the bride and groom.
- Walima
After the Nikah (Nikkah), the wedding feast is known as “Walima or Valima”. The primary purpose of Walima is to inform the public that two people are getting married.
In secret marriages, both parties must be notified, and they are not considered valid. The festival is a time of celebration for friends, family, and loved ones.
Moreover, everyone should be invited to the party, including the poor.
This ceremony should not be wasted, as the Prophet (PBUH) said: “The most blessed Nikah is the one that costs the least.” — [Al-Bayhaqi]
According to Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH): “The worst nourishment is a marriage ceremony (Walima) in which the rich people are invited and the poor are not.

A Muslim marriage also involves an offer and a response. Nikah Namas can be used to prove the contents of a Nikah in court cases involving marriage. Nikah agreements are intended to be drafted in a way that is easy to understand if a dispute arises, containing both facts and conditions.
Nikah Nama has columns for maintaining, delegating, and restricting talaq information. A special circumstances column is included. Nikah Namas should include current Nikah contract terms during or before the ceremony.
