Quick Take: Trump and Wahhabism

As someone who spends some time following the news of cults like Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia and trying to understand their motivations, there are some interesting parallels between them and Trumpism.

At their core, both Trumpism and Wahhabism are a dissatisfaction with what they have. They believe they are owed more, but what the more is, or why they are owed it is unclear.

Trumpism

  • Make America Great Again.
  • Reference to a mythical past where everything was great, but no specifics.
  • Condones the use of casual violence.
  • Calls on foreign agents to attack America.

Wahhabism

  • Make Islam Great Again.
  • Reference to a mythical past where everything was great, but no specifics.
  • Condones the use of casual violence.
  • Calls on foreign agents to attack America.

What worries me is that Wahhabism has unleashed their worst tendencies on Saudi citizens and foreigners. Fortunately, that has not happened in America, but what happens if the founder of Trumpism loses the election. These are individuals with guns, who have been told they are owed something, and do not have to work to get it. Violence against the perceived internal enemy has already been approved. Trumpism has already allowed everyday acts of hate to increase, and this is when the founder is ascendent.

I fear we need to start taking the potential fallout of the founder’s loss very seriously.
