UCD CHARRETTE PROCESS REFLECTION

What did I do? Design is a process. With regards to what we learned about in our studio session last friday, we learned about design, and what it takes to get from point A to point B in the most efficient and innovative manner. During our studio session, we were tasked with developing ideas for automobile interfaces that would solve common problems. However, instead of jumping right into the “solution”, we began by brainstorming (a form of ideation) what types of users exist in the automobile industry.

How did I do it? I started off by entering the room and sitting at a table with my fellow colleagues. As our sprint began, we slowly but surely generated a good list of users within the time frame given. After a few ideas were generated, I was lucky enough to be dispatched to another group to bring in a problem and ways for us to tackle the issue. In this new group our assigned task was to develop a design that would assist a city-commuter in getting to their workplace more efficiently. We decided to brainstorm the different types of cars these individuals might own and decided a smart car would be the best choice and designed accordingly.

We made sure to include an example scenario and example interaction panels to show how the individual might use it. Our main scenario involved the user using his smart car to find the fastest route with best parking.

Why did I do it? I made these choices along with my project group because we wanted to design with the user in mind. More specifically we wanted the design to be as easy for the user to use so that the good design would go unnoticed.


Why does this matter? I learned through this process that every decision you make with regards to design matters. More importantly it is important for you know why you make every decision and why you don’t make certain decisions that ultimately end up in your design. When you want to communicate your design to others it’s very important to make note of every decision you made with reasoning to back it up. Having good design habits will carry through in the future, especially if you are able to keep them up during time crunches.


So now what? With what I have learned through this process, I will now be more conscientious of the decisions that I make when designing for other users who are not like myself. This also carries through when working or collaborating with diverse groups of individuals who can input different ideas from different backgrounds into the ultimate design.
