ETRUSCAN CIVILIZATION

📌 Cortona — Tuscany Region

In Cortona there are many prestigious testimonies of the Etruscan civilization.

Situated on a hill, with the marvelous scenery of the Valdichiana at its feet, Cortona is one of the most important Etruscan fortresses in Tuscany.

The Archaeological Park and the MAEC — Museum of the Etruscan Academy and of the City, are among the symbolic places of Etruscan culture to visit with a reduced admission.

The historic center, enclosed within the walls built between the 4th and 2nd century BC, is arranged around the main square, Piazza della Repubblica, which is an excellent starting point for the continuation of the visit.

Here is the beautiful Palazzo Comunale dating back to the 12th century, with a monumental staircase and a bell tower.

We continue towards Piazza Signorelli, with a visit to the Theater of the same name, built in the 19th century in a neoclassical style.

Among the things to do, a nice lunch based on local delicacies is certainly contemplated.

The dishes of the poor tradition include fegatelli, croutons with black cabbage, and pici alla contadina, or homemade pasta topped with meat sauce or cacio e pepe.

After lunch, we leave for a trek along the medieval walls, which allows you to cross the ancient parts: Santa Maria, Porta Bifora (the only one of Etruscan origin) and Porta Sant’Agostino.

From the latter you reach the Church of San Francesco, which houses the relics of the saint.

Just outside the historic center, we reach the panoramic point of Cortona, where the Girifalco Fortress stands from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view!
