I think that the vision of the product manager ideally focused on the business while staying hands off with the NB team fits only certain PM roles (sometimes called business PMs or outbound PMs). More commonly PMs feel that the day to day work with the team, on vision, goals, requirements, experiments, etc. is a very important part of their role.
