Diablo 2 Speedrun Gets Derailed After Runner Finds the RPG’s Uber-Rare 1-in-3 Million Drop, and Sells It Immediately

A Diablo 2 Resurrected speedrunner snagged the rarest drop the game has to offer, only to sell it to a vendor for 35,000 gold immediately.

Diablo 2 and 4 speedrunner Kano was streaming an assassin-focused world record attempt when a Zod Rune appeared atop a head of loot, sparkling in a way befitting its immense rarity.

“A Zod Rune! That’s my highest speedrun rune,” he exclaimed, adding, “That’s the first-ever Zod I found, by the way.” However, the trinket’s fate was sealed as Kano swiftly returned to a vendor and sold it for 35,000 gold, much to the amusement and surprise of his chat.

To delve into the numbers, Diablo 2 Resurrected fans widely recognize the Zod Rune as the rarest drop in the game. According to D2RuneWizard, the best odds of obtaining one come from a Hell Baal’s quest drop, with a probability of 1:2,987,183. Whether that’s worth 35,000 gold is up for debate.

There’s some contention over whether Tyrael’s Might holds the title of rarest item in the game. The distinction depends on whether we’re discussing the original Diablo 2 or Resurrected. The latter features Terror Zones, which introduce monsters above your current level, making endgame farming for items like Tyrael’s Might more manageable. However, you still need to defeat Baal for these zones to appear, and that’s where most speedruns conclude.

Ultimately, both items are exceptionally rare, though the Zod Rune is likely to hold the title, especially given that many players, like Kano, may end up vendoring them immediately anyway.
