Gameplay Journal Entry #2

Omori is a psychological horror RPG game. The game was created on RPG Maker MV which I have never heard before doing some research. RPG Maker is an engine that will let players create games with little programming knowledge. It has a lot of things already given too the game designer such as , sample data, a battle system mode, and easy to make maps. All of which are used in Omori. Omori is made the same way with tiles and simple sprites, but Omori really plays with surrealism and different areas they can go. RPG Maker really includes the games “core” and lets creators not have to worry about coding but focusing on characters and design.

Omori also utilizes the battle system which has a pretty unique mechanic. It is turn based fighting, but there are emotions that effect how strong or weak a hit is. Each character has a different ability to change emotions, either happy, sad or angry. The emotions are used against the opponents to make the team stronger. Also there are follow up actions that happen after the initial hit. Each character has their own different abilities and follow ups and you have to play and figure out which ones work the best for the situation you're in.

In Omori you can really tell how much the engine was driving the game. The layout of the world, the battles, the interface is all the engine, and the art. The game environment is really cute / creepy at times, and works well with the game. You can tell how its made with tiles and looking at RPG Makers interface it looks really easy to create. If I ever make an RPG I might have to try out RPG Maker MV. It really looks like they have made it simple for creators to create that type of game with not a lot of knowledge. Going from having to completely code and figure out games to having semi pre coded game engines that allow you to just design a world is amazing.

This is how RPG Maker MV works. You can bring in your own tiles and basically paint them in the areas you want.
