DETERMINED VS. DECIDED

Do you stop until you get what you want?

TOO YOUNG OR GETTING IT!?

My 18 year-old niece got married over the weekend.

Yes, I know she is young, but that is the point of this post.

As she slowly danced with her father, I started reminiscing about the little girl that tried to sell anything and everything she made by hand.

For the first time, I recognized something in her at age 18 that most people don’t get until their late twenties.

Here is the context…

She DECIDED to get married two months ago. She knew only a few things:

  1. She loved the groom and he was the one
  2. They had no money or little financial help so they will be funding this on their own
  3. She wanted her father there to walk her down the aisle to give her away
  4. She works at McDonald’s making a whopping $10 an hour. He is in the service and couldn’t contribute too much to the planning, so most of this was ALL on her.

DETERMINATION

I have always shared the concept of determination with my nieces and nephews.

None of them come from a background of means by any sort, so I tried by all accounts to instill the confidence that they can do anything AS LONG AS they want to make it a reality bad enough.

She was the first to pull the trigger.

In a month in a half, she organized an entire wedding from nothing to a beautiful memory. Everything was hand made, paid for, and organized by her.

And guess what… everything she decided on happened.

She made damn sure of it!

DETERMINED VS. DECIDED

Most people decide on something and think that is enough. As a matter of fact, they are proud they decided on something, so much so they forget to actually do what they decided on.

Determined individuals understand the power of action and recognize that decisions are pointless with out the determination to see them through.

What are you waiting for?

That is why resolutions are completely B.S.

I hate New Year’s resolutions! I think they are a setup for disappointment, a contributor to self-doubt, and make everyone a liar.

I’m sure we all have made them:

  • Losing weight
  • Quit smoking
  • Run more
  • Build relationship
  • The list goes on and on

Every year only 8% of individuals are successful in achieving their resolution. January 1st thousands and thousands of people DECIDE to flip a switch for change.

REAL TALK

Get something…

There isn’t a switch to flip!

There shouldn’t be a particular date once a year that motivates you to get shit done.

Determination is an action word that contributes to results and results can be made any time and any day of the year!

If you want something then have the determination to get it!

Otherwise… you just made yet another pointless decision.
