Life is short. Life on social media is shorter.

Everything these days seems to happen fast.

Fast food. Fast cars. Fast download speeds. Fast growing. Fast drying fabrics. Fast break. Fast acting pain relief. Fast track. Fast charging. Fast cars. Fast Pass. Fast facts. Fast Company. The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. And who could forget Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”. You get the picture.

Life is just whizzing us by. And not just the so called “real” world; the virtual world, and more specifically, social media is even faster. Way faster. Our digital and social media lives are so ephemeral that our posts, Tweets, Snaps and pics are gone before you can say Zuckerberg.

But, don’t take my word for it. When you really start to dig into the data you see just how true this really is.

On Facebook you basically have a few hours before a post goes into the social ether.

Hurry up!
  • 75% of engagement occurs within the first 5 hours
  • Impressions are even shorter than Engagement, with only 2 Hrs 30 min to reach 75% of its max, and Reach is even worse: 75% of your audience sees your message in less than 2 Hrs! — Source — Wiselytics

On Twitter it’s worse. Way worse.

  • The half-life for a tweet averages at about 18 minutes. Source — Moz

And finally on Instagram.

  • Good news it’s a tad better that “On average, posts by top brands garner 216 comments, with 50% of comments being posted in the first 6 hours and 75% of comments being posted in the first 48 hours.” Source — Simply Measured

Social media has eviscerated the concept of permanence. Poof it’s gone.

We need to do better. We need something that slows things done a smidge. We need to get back some permanence in our lives.

At Mylestoned we’re working on this.
