Why millionaires would pay 6 figures for this pineapple.

The pineapple is an iconic fruit that's been around for centuries. But it's not cheap — most pineapples cost $1,500 or more.

If you've ever wondered how much a pineapple costs in real life, you're not alone. The most expensive pineapples sold at auction can sell for thousands of dollars per piece.

But why does this happen? Is the price really justified? And what about those who have been offered a pineapple for more than $100,000? Do they really think it's worth it?

The answer might surprise you.

As the world's most expensive fruit, a pineapple is a symbol of wealth and luxury. If you can afford a pineapple, you're probably wealthy enough to buy one. But if you want a pineapple so bad that you'd pay six figures for just one, here are some of the most famous examples of price-gouging millionaires who have done just that:

In 2016, an anonymous billionaire from Dubai purchased a 174-pound (79 kg) pineapples from Australia for $1 million. The buyer was reportedly seeking a private island for his own personal use.

A New Zealand man spent $4.5 million on two pineapples in 2013 — the largest single purchase ever made at auction for fresh produce.

The pineapple is a fruit that's been enjoyed for centuries. It was first cultivated in Madagascar over 2,000 years ago and has since spread to more than 50 countries.

While some people prefer eating the fruit raw, others prefer cooking it. That's why you can find pineapple rings and even whole slices of pineapple in many recipes.

And while we're on the subject of recipes, there are several varieties of pineapple that you can use when preparing them. The most expensive variety? The Ananas de Saint-Pierre (St. Pierre Pineapple). This type of pineapple fetches around $15 per pound at auction houses like Sotheby's or Christie's.

The most expensive pineapple in the world is the Giant Muskmelon, a fruit native to Brazil. It can sell for more than $100 per pound, making it one of the most expensive fruits in the world.

The record price for a muskmelon was set in 2005 by a Russian businessman who paid $49,900 for a specimen from Brazil. He claimed that it was only one of two such fruits in the world.
