Last night I decided on a whim to read Jack London again, THE CALL OF THE WILD. Something I have read as a girl of 9 or 10. Reading it again after practically half a century , I was absolutely fascinated. A life of a dog , from the dog’s perspective , during the gold rush in Alaska. It totally grabbed me , it was like reading the most exciting thriller! I finished the book the same eevening! When a writer can achieve that effect , just writing about a dog, one of the team that pulls the sledge , to me the man is a genius. Of course there is the backgroud to the story — the gold rush. Also interesting. Looking backward , we can see it was like a disease , an addiction , similar to gambling, but then , it was contageous, too. The gold rush. Does anybody see any similarities between that and this new trend of the startup enerprises? This compulsive need to get rich, as if that is the key to happiness?
