LIFE REVIEWS — IN THE AFTERLIFE DURING NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES

Afterlife experiences that continue long enough generally include a Life Review, and we have accounts of hundreds of these such that we can make some generalisations. Regardless of how many I listen to or read, they make me uncomfortable. See how you feel.

The Life Review involves seeing events from your life replayed for you in extraordinary detail. The mode of presentation varies tremendously depending on who you are and is age appropriate. For example, children often report that it was like watching a 3D movie or a TV show, a presentation with which they are familiar. For adults it can be similar, but many report that it seemed to be super-fast or even all-at-once. This is presumably is because the spirit of the NDEr has been set free from the ponderous brain, left behind now on earth, and can absorb vast amounts of information in a trice.

Besides differing modes of presentation, the Life Review includes other unusual features. For example, you may have replayed to you the emotions you felt at the time, even while still in the womb, and thoughts you considered private are also displayed!!

You may also be shown the emotions and thoughts of others with whom you interacted, and even scarier perhaps is that you may be shown short cameos of the effect certain of your actions have had on the lives of others. For example, a young man who had previously bullied a boy at school saw how protective the boy’s parents had become afterwards despite having removed their son from that school, to the point where the son almost committed suicide. A girl was shown how something negative that she had said to her sister, unbeknown to her, had had a deep and negative effect on that sister throughout life — and so on.

Not everything you see is negative; far from it. You see positive and often unexpected outcomes of things you did, without having known previously the good ramifications that had resulted. And there are reports of people the NDEr may not have known about, such as seeing his or her mother who had died during childbirth and feeling the love she had felt for her baby, or a father about whom a son had been told little or nothing previously.

The interviewer during the NDE keeps you watching even if the content becomes gruelling and you want to turn aside. Who is that interviewer? It is often God the Father, sometimes Jesus Christ, less often an angelic being or even a dead relative who has been given that responsibility. In one amusing, to me, case it was the archangel Michael and a lesser known angel Raphael who accompanied a Hindu Indian doctor during his adventures in the afterlife. On return, his wife asked him perhaps in annoyance why it had been non-Hindu angels who had taken him through the afterlife when their Hindu religion had so many gods of their own? The fact is, no-one can choose the details of an NDE, however; the experiences are obviously pre-planned in great detail specifically for that person.

One of the earliest NDE interviews I conducted almost 40 years ago was with Bob Bosworth, son of the more famous FF Bosworth. Bob was a man of utmost integrity, who had spent years helping the poor and disadvantaged in Africa. He described for me how he had died during a car accident. His Life Review was perhaps more benign that most. Was it a judgement? No, not at all! “Judgement Day is not yet”, was his response. Well, then, what was its purpose? He believed it was for self-evaluation — –showing him mistakes he had made and things he could have done better.

“And have you learnt from your Life Review?”

“I have. I have adopted a different approach to many things.”

This, then, is the deeper purpose of the Life Review: a self-assessment this side of Judgement, an opportunity to do things better on return to life on earth. That is why it is planned so carefully, and pulls no punches—and must be seen as a great gift and privilege accorded to the few, to facilitate a course-correction in their lives on return.

Alongside many further examples of Life Reviews in my analysis of the whole NDE phenomenon, in my book titled “Living Beyond — Making Sense of Near Death Experiences”, I trace successful and unsuccessful returns to earth of NDErs. Because millions are finding unexpected difficulties in making this return, it is a topic I will write about later on. If you know anyone who may still have questions about NDEs, or is struggling to adapt again to life on earth, please recommend this series of articles I am doing. Thank you.
