In 2012 I saw a video about the coefficient of optimism and illusion, a fabulous speech made by Emilio Durò a Bachelor of Economics that decided to make a change in his life and start studying why there are people that whatever they do, everything goes right for them. It is a video that I strongly recommend to see once a year (although it is in Spanish I will translate some of his lines*) to keep in mind some lessons for our daily life. Now that I am immersed in these changes in life, I saw again Emilio’s speech, it gives me energy! He said that
we live in a world that has stopped laughing, has stopped being passionate…
From my humble point of view, it is true, we need to be emotionally active in order to enjoy all the aspects of our life. Being optimistic is what will help us to keep going.
According to him, when NASA has to send someone to the moon they do not look at the IQ, they look at the Optimistic coefficient. Could you imagine traveling to the moon with a pessimistic person? you will probably receive comments like: we are going to fall down! what is that noise??!, something sounds wrong! = Total paranoia!… In terms of success or failure, we think it’s a rational thing, but actually failing is not rational, is because at some point you lose the illusion and you just don’t want to get up every morning. The worst thing is that we have made “bad humor” a profession. We are in a world that if you laugh, smile or say that you are happy then you are not rational. If you are laughing, then you are not working, sounds familiar?…
A tip on life: life gives you cards, you can’t choose them, but you can decide how to play with them ;)
He also gives a master class about our brains, we have three. The Reptilian, which deals with survival. 80 to 90% of sickness are generated by this one. It gives us headaches, fatigue, makes the impossible to make us have some rest, to go to bed. It usually sends us alerts (pains) in order to modify our current way of living. If we don’t listen to them, it will send bigger alerts/bigger diseases so we see ourselves obligated to stop and change. It prefers a disease that can control than stress that is uncontrollable. Remember, the brain expresses thru our body. The disease is just an effect, not the cause.
Those who get up on a grumpy mood, laugh less and less, don’t feel motivated about the new days, those are the alerts that reptilian brain is sending to you, letting you know that life how you are living it, is not convenient for you! So is our responsibility to make the necessary changes, because if we don’t do it, our brain will do it drastically. So please listen to your bodies!
He also talked about Man’s Search for Meaning a 1946 book by Viktor Frankl, which talk about his experience on a concentration camp. He found out that those people that have a why in their lives, find a how!
I’ll talk about the other two brains: Limbic and Cortex, in new posts. As you can see, is a topic that fascinates me!
Other interesting facts in the video:
+Laughing increments 25% of our memory
+A kid that laughs learn 25% faster
+Those who laugh life longer (21% more)
+The most drastic change so far is life expectancy, not internet
+The happy & optimistic people pay 60% to 100% more than others
+Our brain only learns emotional things, and it’s tricky enough to see only the emotions it wants to see
+If you don’t enjoy what you do, if you don’t feel passionate about it; you will fail
+Our actual crisis is not economical, is about a lacking of desire to live, to have illusions, projects, something that make us get up every day. There are 21 years old teenagers that don’t care about anything.
Happiness is not about getting things, happiness comes to life when you have reasons to get up every morning. 97% of people don’t know why they get up. Do you?
