3 Tips on How to Own That Performance

I have a performance to do later this evening.

I like to perform on stage. It gives me some kind of a kick. All the preparation, hard work, and creativity being unleashed all in the span of a few minutes.

I’ve been dancing for about 5 years now, and I still get nervous before I get on stage.

I kinda like it. That feeling of my stomach flipping over and twisting into knots; it gives me my shot of adrenaline that leaves me wanting for more.

Here are three tips I’ve learned to make getting up on stage to perform a lot easier for those who aren’t used to it.

1. Practice

This goes without saying. 1 minute on the stage should be equal to 1 hour of doing it repeatedly again and again. Doesn’t matter whether it is a dance performance, a sales pitch, or anything else that requires a pre-planned delivery of something.

It is said that before going on stage, TED speakers revise their scripts until they can read it from memory while doing menial tasks, like driving, or making morning coffee.

2. Review

Review review review. Get someone to hold your phone and record you doing your stuff. This is especially important so you’d know how people see you, or how you sound like. Might be a bit uncomfortable to see yourself, but its the only way to guarantee a great performance.

3. GO AWWFFFFFFF

Yeah that’s basically it. To “go off” means to get comfortable with yourself and your material and just going at it without any fear of being judged. You are who you are, never apologize for being yourself.

For dancers, please knock yourselves out. Feel the song, extend your limbs, don’t hold anything back. Singers, I’m sure you’ve heard of the term; sing your heart out. For those doing presentations or pitches: go for it. Make your day happen.
