This is Kim, He is a “Friend of Ours”

Here is why North Korean Supreme Leader, Kim Jong Un can shoot any missile he wants to shoot in any direction over our heads that he wants to shoot it. China is his friend. China is his friend because he maintains a buffer zone between the 50,000 American ground troops that are permanently stationed in South Korea and The Democratic Peoples Republic of China. China does not want American troops on mainland Asia at all and really, really does not want us bivouacked on its national border with listening devices and spy drones.

Kim Jong Un is their point man and they back him to the hilt. We the U.S., moreover, must always and forever make “nice, nice” with China. They more or less own us. Here is what I mean.

Suppose for a minute that you weren’t born into poverty like we both were. Suppose for a minute you were To The Manor born. Suppose your grandfather and father were tremendously lucky in their endeavors and had worked doggedly to build up an estate of substantial wealth, before you were born. Now I am also sure that once you finished your education in all the right schools that you too would become pretty savvy in business yourself, after all your family is “exceptional.” I am sure you, with your brains, brawn and charm would redouble your inheritance. In short, live the American Dream. Unlike your crusty old grandfather however, you certainly intend to enjoy the fruits of your (and his) hard work. You, the genius are also you the spender. It’s not even your fault that you spend so much. Times have changed. You need super expensive private schools for your kids because the public schools have gone down the toilet. Boy do you ever need security. With all the dangerous thugs skulking around you need security technology and security people. You also need cars, cars, cars and your kids need cars too, all of them.

That epic home you had custom built for your beautiful wife needs a lot of upkeep being as how huge it came out. She really needs help running the place anyway. At some point you look up and realize your “nut” is $20,000 per month minimum and growing! Your investments are OK but they don’t throw off 20K a month. You have already financed a bunch of stuff you could have paid cash for and now you just don’t have the cash flow to pay the damn credit card bills themselves.

Its a challenge but not that much of a problem. You are surrounded by good hard working people of modest means and small dreams who are looking for a place to invest their savings. You can offer them better than bank rates and everybody benefits. They appreciate you, paying the high interest that you do and besides you are their best customer for the little services they provide and for the goods that they sell in their shops. Without you everybody goes hungry. So you borrow and they lend generously. Every time you get caught up short, they lend again and lend more. They lend. you borrow, they sell, you buy, they produce, you consume. You lecture them about the right way to live and they listen raptly.

Somethings are kind of going off the rails, though. Your kids really dont see why they should even have to work at a job at all, they are rich, after all. Your family that you have been providing for so abundantly seems to be always expanding by way of some surprise distant relatives showing up and promising to carry their load. They do indeed pull their weight and you naturally share all the goodies with them.

That one neighbor though, especially seems to be locked in to your program. The Changs, they are an odd family, always working, never playing. They eat quietly at home. They don’t go to rock concerts, they don;t really do much of anything except work and fix your stuff when it breaks. Their actual total loans to you are kind of humongous but that is nobody’s business. They like working and lending and you like playing and spending. They respect you for your gargantuan estate that you have accumulated but they always have a subtle fear that you may decide that you want their house. This is the uneasy truce that exist between you two families.

Its not like THAT at all you assure the Chang family. You admire them, you want them to succeed too but you want them to always remember who built this town and you caution the Changs to not be meddling in the local political affairs. That is your baliwyck.

The Changs are sort of OK with that warning but they are ever suspicious of what is going on at City Hall. They notice that your estate keeps growing towards theirs and notice that you are quick to co-opt and corrupt anybody in town who seems to strike up a friendship with them. The tension is getting worse and worse while the monthly monetary transactions continue. Ultimately the Chang family cautions you not hassle the Chang’s new friends while quietly encouraging the loudmouth pissant in town who dares to take you on publicly. His bellicose rants are so over the top that you have privately speculated in putting out a contract to hurt him or kill him. But anytime you square off and try to face the jerk down, the Chang family is standing there smiling back at you. You grumble and bloviate but you take it. Again and again.

The thing is, if the Changs aren’t there on the first of every month to restructure your debt, then somebody’s Lamborghini is going back to the dealership and a bunch of nieces and nephews are about to learn what is like to take the bus to community college while carrying a brown bag lunch. The huge destination wedding that you are planning for your third daughter will have to be scaled down to a rented fire hall and the Barbie Dream House you built for your wife will have to go up for sale. The only way to avoid all that is to not rattle the Changs. If they want to be friends with that nut-case that’s on them. You say that you will hold the Changs personally responsible for their wild and crazy friend but they are not that worried. See you on the first of the month.

This is China’s relationship to America. They do need to do business with us but they have the upper hand and they know it. They know that we can not go back. We can not produce our own clothing or manufactured goods, we cannot pay our own doctors and drug dealers, we just plain can not go back to working. Its demeaning to take orders from some ignorant boss or foreman. My old man had to that all his life, but I will never sink that low.

If China gets mad at us and stops lending there will be no social security checks next month, no SSI, SSD, SNAP, WIC, TWIC, TSA, Medicare, Medicaid, Flood Insurance, Air Traffic Control, Section 8, Title 9 or anything else. It will all be gone overnight. That is not a theory, that is just simple accounting. If we have to fight them we will have to fight them without those social programs. We will quickly surrender because we need our prescriptions. Done deal.

In the words of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un “How you like me now”?
