Understanding My Privilege, Even While Trans

Without using our privilege to help others, we concede to a corrupt system.

The average life expectancy of a transwoman of color is around 35 years old. They live a life that much of America has found to be dangerous towards their “ideals.” Though, if your ideals lead you to kill the underprivileged, then maybe your ideals are awful? Just a thought.

Back in the early ’80s, their life expectancy was much shorter due to the AIDs epidemic, which mainly targeted the gay and transgender community. Unfortunately, if you are younger than 30, it can be hard to understand the absolute tragedy of this.

I’m 21 currently, but during my time on Medium I’ve sensed that the average age here is much older. So to you all past 35, please just take a moment to imagine these ill fated murders. Entire communities, thousands of people fighting not just to live a fulfilling life but also to even make it past their 40’s.

These women fight against even themselves, with their unusually high suicide rates. Even dating in their own community presents risks of death. More so for those who decide to date outside of the community.

In America, AIDs has fallen from its pedestal of a death sentence to a virus of quite manageable proportions. Though…
