An Open Letter to Chancellor Barnhart From a Senior House Resident

I must say, as someone who values the quality of the mathematics education that I received at MIT, I was embarrassed and appalled to note the sampling issues you write about when I viewed the PDF published at chancellor.mit.edu, along with the blatant failure to do any additional breakdown in the No Degree Yet category and absence of any attempt to normalize data by the # of students enrolled in 5-year Master’s or multiple degree programs. And, as you note, that is before one even approaches the question of whether this is correlation or causation.

Kudos to you for your even tone and reasoned appeal, I do not know that what I might have written in your shoes would have been so constructively phrased.
