A Rough Draft of My Justin Trudeau Femfic
Ever since it has become apparent that we are living in a dystopian novel, I’ve found myself fantasizing about what it would be like to live in a world where we have a popular, well-liked, handsome, charismatic leader who respects everyone and makes decisions that benefit all people. Basically, I fantasize about living in an idealized version of Canada. I’ve decided to write down some of my fantasies in the form of fanfic (or “femfic,” as I like to call it in this case), featuring my original character, a brilliant, successful journalist named Athena, and my limited knowledge of Canada and its political system.

In the first scene, Athena meets Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the first time at a fundraising gala for refugees.
Athena took a Canadian bacon-wrapped scallop off of a waiter’s tray and looked around the ballroom. Drake had just finished performing, but the guest of honor was late. She popped the hors d’oeuvre into her mouth. She was very grateful to have been assigned to cover the Canadian Prime Minister, including this gala to raise money for refugees.
A commotion began to stir in the room — The Prime Minister had finally arrived. Athena made her way closer to the front of the room to get a better view. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took the stage to much applause. “I apologize for being late,” he said. “I was in Mexico today, meeting with President Enrique Peña Nieto to ensure the strength of out relationship with our fellow North Americans in Mexico.” Then he launched into a short speech about how Canada’s diversity made the country great. He stepped down as the audience gave a standing ovation.
In this next scene, Athena is interviewing the Prime Minister over lunch.
“Even though the Canadian News Network can be tough on me sometimes, I appreciate what you and your colleagues contribute to society,” said Justin.
“Thank you,” Athena replied, taking the last bite of her poutine and washing it down with a sip of champagne. “It means a lot to everyone at CNN to have your respect and support behind our organization.”
The waiter approached our table. “Will you need one check or two today?” He asked.
“Two checks please,” Justin answered, “Because we live in a society where every citizen has total social, political and economic equality no matter regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or religion.”
Justin and Athena paid their checks. As they were getting up to leave, the two shook hands.
“Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today, Mr. Prime Minister,” Athena said.
“It was my pleasure,” Justin said. “Would you like to visit me at Parliament tomorrow? I’d be happy to answer any more follow up questions you might have.”
“Tomorrow?” Athena replied. “I can’t. I have a doctor’s appointment scheduled thanks to the great healthcare system we have here. Does the next day work?”
“Sure!” Justin said. “I’ll see you then.”
In the last scene, Athena goes to meet the Prime Minister at Parliament.
“I’m sorry I had to keep you waiting. I was on a conference call with the heads of state of our NATO allies,” Justin apologized.
“It’s OK — I totally understand,” Athena reassured him. “I think it’s important to have a strong alliance with other countries that share our values and goals.
“I’m about to meet with some scientists to discuss what we can do to protect the environment. In the meantime, Can I get you something to drink?” The Prime Minister asked.
“Sure,” Athena said. “A double-double would be great!”
