Where is the Frontline in Cybersecurity?

Trick question. There is none. The attack surface is everywhere. There is no front or back. At the most profound level, there is neither an outside nor inside. That is one of the cardinal rules of sound military strategy.

Many a cyber-defense system pays lip service to the axiom, yet proceeds on the basis as if the attack surface is finite. Sometimes, it is cognitive dissonance, at other times convenience.

The Maginot Line did not work for France. It does not work in cybersecurity. Eschew faith in Air-Gap defenses and many others.

Cybersecurity starts with right taxonomy. Then, pragmatic risk versus resource calculations can be made or, even better, the creation of innovative systemic solutions that take as their starting point the axiom “there is no front line.”
