Not entirely true. It’s not that Android users hate paying for anything, it’s more to do with the fact that the Google Playstore is saturated with tons of news apps that all have similar appearances and identical features. Some of which are free. It is very hard to develop a news app in the Playstore and charge for it unless it does something unique. That is the issue with Android having no approval process as Apple does.
