US to recognize China not Taiwan, 38 years ago

#yesterdaytoday December 15

In one of the most dramatic announcements of the Cold War, President Jimmy Carter states that as of January 1, 1979, the United States will formally recognize the communist People’s Republic of China (PRC) and sever relations with Taiwan.
Following Mao Zedong’s successful revolution in China in 1949, the United States steadfastly refused to recognize the new communist regime. Instead, America continued to recognize and supply the Nationalist Chinese government that had been established by Chiang Kai-shek on the island of Taiwan. — History

Another day, another head-on collision with our President-Elect and history.

Recently, Trump has publicly questioned the One-China policy which claims there is only one China, despite the fact that both the People’s Republic of China (PRC — China) and the Republic of China (ROC — Taiwan) claim to be China. ChIIIna. China. Are you confused yet? Let’s take a step back…

So, it’s 1912…

and China’s last dynasty the Qing said, “Bye! See you never!” so the Republic of China (ROC) decided, “We’re in charge now.” But the Communist Party of China (CPC) was all, “Really? We’ll see about this.” Meanwhile, Japan was across the sea thinking, “lolz you think China is yours? Nope, it’s mine!”

So, in 1937…

the Empire of Japan invaded China because the world really didn’t have enough conflict going on. And the Chinese had to hit pause on their Civil War until the end of WW2.

So, by 1949…

the CPC said, “Surprise! We control all of mainland China.” So, the friends of the ROC fled to Taiwan and said, “We’re the real China” and Mao and his friends established the PRC and said, “We’re the real China.” And the US had a crush on the ROC and the USSR had a crush on the PRC and that was that.

Until 1978…

when Carter comes along and says, “JK we think the PRC is hotter than you but don’t worry ROC… sure we won’t recognize you any more (because One-China and all) but we’ll still pay child support.”

So now, it’s 2016…

and Trump is saying, “JK to the JK. Can’t we just recognize you both. Let’s have two Chinas. Actually, let’s have a million Chinas. And you can have a China. And you can have a China…”

And this is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but with a Trump.
