“Hitting on” does not imply contact. Hitting on means conveying sexual and/or romantic interest, possibly boorishly, but that’s a nuance.
Hitting on people is not assault or harassment.
That doesn’t mean you can’t assault or harass people while hitting on them. Of course you can and people do like our participant in the story did.
You’re construing my very valid point as some kind of defense of the actions of our cretin here. They’re not. The person here asked for clarification and deserves clarification, not confusion.
As for “guiding companies”, my point was EVEN IF the company is the worst people in the world they should still take this action. I’m saying there’s really no room for waffling in such a context, and any waffling is frankly bizarre. Obviously if you care about good outcomes or good treatment of people, that should be an overriding concern, but I toss that in there because some people think about these problems in a different way and showing that all cases should lead to the same conclusion is useful for some.
The fact that you then went on the attack and call me justifying and a pervert because I’m trying to provide a clearer understanding of what is and isn’t harassment and what is and isn’t acceptable in a broader (really in my mind, more relevant) context, is sad. It’s important that people recognize that avoiding textbook sexual harassment is required, and what it is too so they can take action when it happens. But it’s important that people recognize that there’s a much larger territory of unreasonably awful behavior which also needs pushback against.
That you turn this into me being a *pervert* is frankly bizarre, and *much* more muddying than your prior error. Not everyone who disagrees with you is a sexual predator, and not everyone who disagrees with you is attempting to defend or dismiss problems. Attempting to classify someone who points out an error in your presentation as a sexual pervert is the most lazy type of approach to shutting down communication possible. It’s important not to shut down communication with people who are your allies in this topic (if you’d bother to read and understand the content). Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.
