Tucker on Campus!
We all are familiar with the famous actor and stand-up comedian, Chris Tucker. He was born and raised in Decatur, Georgia and eventually moved to Los Angeles where he started a family. Destin Tucker, Chris Tucker’s 19-year-old son, decided that it is time for at least one Tucker to return to the streets of “Hotlanta” Georgia. Destin has decided that he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and take on film classes at Morehouse College in Atlanta Georgia. On August 7, along with more than 600 new freshmen, Destin officially moved from his home in Los Angeles to his new freshmen dorm room on the campus of Morehouse College. “I have family here, it’s an all-male school, and it’s historically black,” said Destin. Considering that Chris was recently awarded an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Morris Brown College, it is no surprise that Destin would even consider, let alone attend Morehouse. Destin said he chose Morehouse because he knows “It will be a top-flight education.” It would make even more sense considering the fact that Destin is not the only celebrity kid to attend Morehouse. Former Morehouse football star John David Washington, son of Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, and Kwame Morris, son of music legend Stevie Wonder both attended the institution. He made a great and wise choice with his decision. The Morehouse Cinema, Television, and Emerging Media studies program would be a great fit for Destin. Its mission is to provide a quality basis to the intellectual and artistic study of film and television with the main focus on the craft of storytelling as the foundation for impactful creative productivity. It is also there to prepare students who might want to attend graduate school after college. Considering Destin wants to be a film director, the CTEM’s program would be a nice suit for him because, in addition, the major covers screenwriting, film analysis, film production, Hollywood politics, and much more. This would be good for Destin knowing that alumni Spike Lee ’79 got his start at Morehouse before he went to film school at NYU and Samuel Jackson ’72 became very successful, after re-applying and graduating, and Seith Mann ’95 who wanted to be a director and has directed episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Wire,” “Walking Dead,” and many other series. There those who are not aware of Morehouse College, but those who are aware know what it means attend the institution. The institution is one of the few remaining traditional men’s liberal arts colleges in the U.S. who produce Rhode Scholars. Destin attending Morehouse will not only be a big change and great experience for him, but for his family and the college as well. “It’s so far away from home,” Azja Pryor said. She continued to express how proud she is of her son. It would definitely be a great opportunity to bring more awareness to high school students who might want to attend. With projects such as “Hidden Figures” and “The Quad” being shot on the campus, it will be a great experience that Destin will enjoy for the rest of his educational life attending Morehouse.
