I am proposing a new investment thesis:
๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐บ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐
Below is a small sampling of my reasoning:
โ Myspace (Acq. NewsCorp) โ Sued by Universal Music Group
โ YouTube (Acq. Google) โ Sued by National Music Publishersโ Association (+Viacom)
โ Twitch (Acq. Amazon) โ DMCA takedown lawsuit from major labels
โ Pandora (Acq. Sirius XM) โ Sued by major music publishers
โ TikTok โ Not suedโฆ.but, ya know (Universal took major action)
More recently, we have seen Suno + Udio sued.
The major record labels filed a lawsuit on Tuesday accusing them of using copyrighted music to train their AI models.
History has shown that itโs better to ask for forgiveness than permission when it comes to dealing with the music industry.
Note: this is not to say that Suno and Udio donโt need to figure out a way to fairly compensate musicians for their role in training their modelsโฆthey ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐๐ผ๐น๐๐๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐ฑ๐ผโผ๏ธ (and should look to examples like Jen Music AI for how best to do this)
๐ค That being said โ anytime an entire sector says โ๐โ๐ฑ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ด๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ, ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ปโโฆ.you might want to take a cold hard look in the mirror and ask โAm I the problem?โ
So until the music sector wakes up โ Iโll be continually betting on tech companies that bring the lawsuits.
