Difference between Freedom & Independence
#23 Blog Thursday
Both are intuitive words feel familiar to understand. But in the context, they differ in meaning. How and where to use depends on the user choice, but many times we miss them and go wrong.
Reader Caution: Short blog on my understanding of the difference between Freedom and Independence. And how it is helping me.
Freedom as per Wiki
FREEDOM, generally, is having an ability to act or change without constraint. A thing is “free” if it can change its state easily and is not constrained in its present state. More read
Independence as per Wiki
Whether the attainment of Independence is different from revolution has long been contested, and has often been debated over the question of violence as legitimate means to achieving sovereignty. More read
Both relate to Nation, boundary, and struggles. Strong and patriotic words when we express those words in any conversation. To be frank, I just copy pasted the wiki sentence without reading it, because I’m sure the explanation of those words will relate only to the nation, pride or constitutional beliefs.
Take off the context associated with Freedom and Independence. Consider as a common word, let’s use it in the ordinary day or in work life. Now, what are Freedom and Independence?
So when I started to learn more about Freedom and Independence. I came across this simple example that defines the precise meaning of the both.
Independent means that you can do something by yourself without depending on others, maybe the helps, while freedom has a bigger border which has no restriction or rules. For example, you can ride a bicycle independently with the freedom of going around the whole park.
So Independence does not depend on anyone. It is absolute. Freedom is associated with location & time. It is subjective.
Both these words are closely associated with us in daily work. We accept it or not, that’s the truth. How?
Do you have freedom and Independence in your work? End of the day everyone wants it. Freedom and Independence come with a boundary or a constraint when you take it as a big picture. But how effectively you are using both matters.
I always ask myself when I get committed to any work. Do I have the Freedom and Independence of the project? Off course yes! Nothing in the world has 100% Freedom and Independence. Percentage matter and that define how emotional you get connected to the project.
Some people have grey areas, and they say both are same. I always share them bicycle example.
Understand the difference between Independence and Freedom, will reflect the context in your real life. And you will feel the difference.
Few times my team goes off track, maybe because of the tight projects or by their personal problems. That moment, I have asked them “What is the difference between Freedom and Independence?”.
Both Freedom and Independence come with trust and responsibilities. I trust the person who understands both. And their works will make the differences.
