Nobody’s talking about an obligation. My argument is merely that if we choose to continue using ‘guys’ we do it in the full knowledge that somebody we’re addressing may feel excluded and like we don’t believe she belongs there. It’s not about free speech, it’s about making sure the words you use have the effect you intend. If you intend to make someone feel excluded then go ahead and use words that do that.
