That English Major Really Paid Off
It’s no secret that my family was disappointed when I majored in English.
I entered college with the declared major of chemistry. I loved chemistry. I also loved English. And art. And environmental science. And physics. And a ton of other things. I just loved so damn much.
It was a problem for me as I took classes in all the varying things that interested me. I did a Spanish study abroad program in geology. I did another Spanish study abroad program in farming. Then I did another in Women’s studies.
At least I was consistent with the Spanish. Haha. I had enough Spanish credits by the end of my 4 years to scrape together a second major in Spanish — though I certainly wasn’t fluent.
I’d also done enough study abroad trips in the sciences that I minored in Environmental Science.
But my true love was writing. Regardless of the subject, I loved writing essays in my classes. While I could do multiple choice tests, I appreciated the chance to extrapolate and explain.
I started taking more and more writing classes — like analytical writing, critical theory, and creative writing. I refined and honed my craft. I even got a job as a ghost writer during that time.
