The Confusion that Follows a Late-Identification of Autism
One of the hardest parts of being late-identified autistic is that no one can hand you a clear, concise manual that explains everything that autism is.
As I waded through articles, books, podcasts, and more on my journey to understanding autism (and hence myself), I had a hard time making sense of it all. There was contradictory information. There was information that resonated deeply with me. There was information that didn’t apply to me at all. There was information that I thought might be outdated.
It all felt pretty damn confusing.
It took time for me to go through it all and come to my own answers and understanding.
For example, some authors wrote that autism is not a disability. They discussed the positives of autism and that it can be a super power.
I wasn’t really sure how I felt about it. I let it sit there and I moved on with my life… until someone referenced my essays in their “disability” category.
That forced me to really sit with it and think about it. I wrote an essay about that experience.
