“New Oregon Laws for 2016"

Here are the new Oregon laws for 2016. You may be surprised by a few of them!

  • Birth Control can be prescribed by pharmacists. Doctors no longer need to prescribe it, and insurance agencies must cover the prescription for one year.
  • People will no longer be able to vape in a public place meaning indoors, subways, movie theaters etc.
  • Oregonians will be able to pump their own gas, but with a few conditions. You must be in a county with less than 40,000 people, between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Anything on two wheels such as bicycles and motorcycles will get to go through a red light if the light goes through a full light cycle without turning green, leaving them stuck. *I’m excited for this one because sometimes my motorcycle isn’t heavy enough for the sensors and I sit there until a car comes that is heavy enough.
  • A 25% sales tax will be added to recreational marijuana products sold in dispensaries. The money will go toward state programs including Treatment for Mental Health and Drug, the Common School Fund, and Law Enforcement.
  • If you drive a “regular car”, don’t park it in a parking space for alternative fuel cars, or else you’ll face a $250 fine.
  • Employers with ten or more workers will have to provide five paid sick days a year.
  • Oregon and California will become the first states that will automatically register eligible voters who get or renew their driver’s licenses.
