Corrupt Social Media “I’m Quitting Instagram”

I don’t literally mean that Instagram is corrupt, the idea itself is brilliant. I mean the activities on Instagram are shameful.

The inventors of Instagram, you created a great product and it has been used for its purpose before, which is sharing your life experiences with the public. Instead, over the last few years, it has been used to advertise and broadcast companies and other Instagram pages, this is called a “shout-out”, a way to tell your followers that you are following a page and want your followers to also follow, sometimes, most-times, “Shout-outs” are posted from popular accounts, (this ensures there are a lot of people viewing it), requested from other popular accounts to promote their account, some if not most times these accounts “hire” the other accounts to give a “shout-out”.

Ok this means, let’s say 1 million people follow account A, account B sees they have a lot of followers, so account B says to account A, “ I’ll give you $100 if you give me a “shout-out”, and an extra $20 for every like the post gets, and an extra $30 for every comment.”, of course account A would accept, $100 + $20 a like, and $30 a comment, that’s a lot of money just for advertising. I looked up how to get 1 million followers on Instagram, this is what I found.

Give shoutouts. Another technique for gaining followers is to get shoutouts, and the best way to do this is to give shoutouts yourself. However, a shoutout will also cause a lot of people to unfollow.”

Highlighted is my main point. People try to get more shoutouts by giving them, and then people like me, logical people, unfollow them which is the opposite of their goal. I’m typing this script on Monday February 8th, starting today I’m going to do a test; I’m going to give shoutous. I have 215 followers (I know, pathetic); let’s see how many I have after awhile of daily shoutouts.

I was just looking through my home feed; the ratio of shoutouts to non-shoutouts in 40 posts was 30:10. 30 posts of shoutouts to 10 posts of regular everyday life! That’s crazy!

http://buysellshoutouts.com/ is a popular website for “buying” shoutouts; you can even sell them on there. This proves that people are most likely into giving shoutouts to get money. I find this very annoying. I liked Instagram; I used to go on it every day, now I don’t think I’ve been on there for days. I’ve had Instagram for about 3 years and for probably the first 1 and a half it was great, then my home feed plunged into uninteresting shoutouts.

For these reasons I’m quitting Instagram. You inventors of this wonderful product, you did a great job, it’s just getting old looking at the same shoutouts from hundreds of people. I’m not actually going to delete my account; I’m just going to unfollow all the people that are giving shoutouts. So my list of people I’m following will probably decrease by 70%.

More popular websites for buying/selling and anything to do with shoutouts are.

And there are many more.

Getting paid for posting picture has to sound cool, but think, when other people do this do I enjoy it filling up my home feed? Shoutouts should be band on Instagram and all other social media networks. I use Instagram, Face book, Twitter, and Vine. The one with the highest shoutout rate is Instagram by far. Face Book is probably the lowest.

Shoutouts are the most annoying thing to have to deal with on Social Media, I hope you will agree. Thanks for reading.
