Joe, I know why people do this (because I do it). It happens when you highlight a quote in order to Tweet it. Once the tweet is sent, the pull quote stays highlighted on Medium (when you’re on a PC. It doesn’t do that in the app). I am personally averse to mucking up other people’s presentation with my big green slashes, so 9 times out of 10, once the Tweet is sent, I unhighlight. Poetry is the best example of why I do that. Nothing shatters the flow of a poem for the next reader more than the highlights left by the previous reader. IMHO, of course. I consider it a courtesy to both the writer and future readers.
