Was that what you meant?

Maybe a better term than materialism (for what I meant) is consumerism. There is little to nothing in Western culture to encourage spirituality of any kind. It is rarely even acknowledged as a legitimate aspect of life. From a 21st Century secular perspective, we’re born, we get as much stuff as we can, and we die. Not much thinking beyond that. So if the religions no longer offer effective pathways to the spiritual, people are screwed.
