CS373 Fall 2018: Jack Adams, Week #1
What did you do this past week?
This week I began to play around with Docker which we briefly covered in class this week. I read some blog posts and was particularly interested to learn about how container services like Docker work behind the scenes and how they differ from VMs which I am more familiar with.
What’s in your way?
Right now, as it is the beginning of the semester, nothing is directly in my way. I think my biggest obstacle will be that as an exchange student I haven’t taken the same classes as everyone else in the class, and so there may be some previous knowledge expected by the professor that I don’t have. However, it seems like one of the main goals for this class is to gain the important ability of being able to pick up new technologies quickly, so I’m not too worried about this.
What will you do next week?
Next week I intend to do the reading and get stuck into Docker and any other new technologies we cover in class, maybe trying out some small little test projects. I’m the kind of learner who really has to try something out and get my hands dirty with new tech before I can properly visualise what it is and how it works. I also plan to cover a couple of quick online intro to python tutorials as I’m not really familiar with the syntax, and hopefully try talking to a couple of people in the class ahead of group project teams forming in the next couple of weeks.
What are your expectations for this class?
My expectations for this class are that I will get to try out a lot of useful, different technologies that I haven’t used before, level up my programming skills, and gain a better understanding of how different tools come together to build a fully fledged project and aid the SWE workflow.
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
I would definitely recommend anybody in the class have a quick skim through this blog post on Docker. It covers how containers work and how they differ from VMs.
