I agree with you a lot, Aaron. You make an excellent point!
When you’re working in large teams, you need a level of formality to ensure you reduce the number of decisions you need to make while coding. This increases coding speed and helps other developers understand your work.
The downside is when that formality leads to large amounts of code. There seems to be a lot of people making awesome libraries with heaps of flexibility. But with this flexibility comes the burden of constantly making decisions on how best to code. Some more thought could definitely be spent in this area.
